Family Planning is all about making decisions; when to have children, how many children, how far apart in age.  Dr. Torbati can help you make the decisions that are right for you.

Role of Contraception

Contraception plays an important role in family planning and birth spacing. Since the introduction of the pill in 1960, the average number of children born per woman in the United States has dropped from 3.5 to about two. Effective contraceptive methods can help young women avoid unplanned pregnancy and postpone childbirth. Contraceptive use between pregnancies can help ensure proper spacing between babies. And, for women who have reached their desired family size, birth control can help prevent unplanned pregnancy in later years.

Birth Control Pills - There are two basic types — combination pills and progestin-only pills. Both are made of hormones like those made by a woman's ovaries. Combination pills contain estrogen and progestin. Both types require a medical evaluation and prescription. Both can prevent pregnancy.

Combination pills usually work by preventing a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation). They also thicken the cervical mucus, which keeps sperm from joining with an egg.

Progestin-only pills usually work by thickening the cervical mucus. Less often, they prevent ovulation.

Nuvaring - NuvaRing® is a different kind of birth control.  The comfortable, flexible contraceptive ring that is about two inches in diameter is used to prevent pregnancy. You insert NuvaRing® into your vagina just once a month. The muscles in your vaginal wall will keep NuvaRing® in place for three weeks. During that time, it will slowly release a low dose of hormones that are needed to prevent pregnancy.

Depo Provera is a hormone injection that lasts for 3 months to prevent pregnancy. The injection contains synthetic progesterone and no estrogen. It is usually given in the arm or rear, delivering a high level of progesterone into the body. Depo Provera stops the ovaries from releasing eggs.

Depo Provera causes the cervical mucus to thicken and changes the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to enter or survive in the uterus. These changes prevent fertilization.

Depo Provera is a very private form of birth control because it cannot be seen on the body and requires no home supplies. It does, however, require a clinic appointment every 3 months. Depo Provera is 97-99.7% effective as birth control. It does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS. There are some serious health risks with Depo Provera, so be sure to get all the facts in advance.

Tubal Ligation includes irreversible, permanent methods of contraception.

ESSURE is an elegant office-based method of blockage of the tubes through the cervix.  This procedure requires very light anesthesia, and it does not cause any damage to tissues, and it will not require any recovery.

Dr. Torbati performs this procedure in at the office as an out-patient, and you will return to normal daily activities the next day with out pain or any limitations.

Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation which is performed under general anesthesia, is a type of tubal ligation, Dr. Torbati works with a long metal tube inserted into the abdomen through a tiny incision. This tube, or "laparoscope," has a tiny light and video camera at its tip. With its aid, Dr. Torbati ties, cuts, burns, or clips the tubes closed. Be certain you don't want any more children before you get a tubal ligation. Even though the operation can be reversed, there is no guarantee that you will be able to get pregnant again afterwards. Tubal ligation has no effect other than sterilization. You will continue to have monthly periods, and your sex drive will be unchanged.

Dr. Torbati offers his patients different methods including:

  • Filshie Clip
  • Tubal Banding
  • Tubal Burning

according to their needs.
